Critique of the Week (On a Monday)

Yes, we know, it’s been a while since we’ve published a COW. Hey, we’ve been busy! But we’re starting to find our rhythm again so expect the posts to come fast and furious. This week’s COW comes from Jason the Rohrer. What I like about this critique is that Jason is clearly a fan of the company and the artists and you can feel and hear the struggle he is having as he pens what amounts to a pretty strong pan of the production. This isn’t about the show as much as it is about a ...

Critique of the Week (On a Monday)

Again, very much behind on all my Lemony duties, which is why this week’s COW is once again coming out on a Monday. Nevertheless, here she be.This week’s COW comes from the Holder of all things Travis Michael and his exploits over at Arts In LA. It is ripe with context, opinion and perspective, all the components necessary for a well rounded review. Plus, Travis never hesitates to wade in with his strong opinions, agree with them or not, you definitely get a chance to meet the critic when you read this g...

Critique of the Week (On a Monday)

Deborah Klugman is fast becoming one of my favorite theater critics in LA. Her work at Stage Raw and the LA Weekly, is brusque, to the point and succinct. She is reaching Bill Raden-esque levels with her ability to say much in a short period of time. As she does in this week’s COW below. Would love to see what she could do with a freer platform and more room to really explore her subject matter in more depth. Then again, some shows only deserve 300 words, for better or for worse, case in point…BIG SHOT: ...

Critique of the Week (On a Wednesday)

Firstly, forgive the tardiness of this review shout out.  As the newest full time member of the Lemon’s team its taken a hot second to get all the e-bolts and screws worked out.  Working from a mac book that would be considered a dinosaur by anyone more than a year younger than me doesn’t necessarily help the cause either.  Regardless, here is my first CRITIQUE OF THE WEEK!!!This week I turn my attention to a review of Glory Struck’s production of American Idiot writte...

When a COW is not a COW (Critique of the Week)

My Critique of the Week (COW) pick this week (on time as promised!) is a bit unconventional. For starters, it’s not technically a review but rather an examination of two very different productions currently running in Los Angeles that are both celebrated for their imperfections.   Secondly, the article is written by Charles McNulty, focussing as he too rarely does, on the smaller shows that make up the core of our city’s theater scene.  McNulty is obviously a smart, observant and competent ...

A Tale of Two COWs (Critique of the Week)

Greetings Lemonheads,Rob Mersola’s new play “Luka’s Room” is currently in its world premiere production by The Rogue Machine. Reviews have been favorable but, as with most new works, they often mention the play’s weaker links. This is especially important for new plays as any good critic who sees good in something wants the play to be as close to perfect as it can possibly be. To write a “review” without any sort of OPINION is counter productive to the entire ...

Katie Buenneke Calls Bullshit and Earns this Week's COW (Critique of the Week)

The reviewers have been relatively kind to “Sneaky Ole Time” a new jukebox musical of country songs by Paul Overstreet, currently playing at the Ruskin Group Theater in Santa Monica. Not everyone has been raving but even its luke-warm fans seem mostly indifferent to the musical at worst.  Not LA Weekly’s Kate Buenneke though, she’s pissed and she’s calling “Sneaky Ole Time” out. Calling the show “pathetically sexist,” Buenneke turns out a short...

Critique of the Week

Again, we’ve been snoozing on these, LemonHeads, these COWs, we know it, apologies, both JT, our current LM Editor and myself, have lately been a-bustling on other projects, personal and professional, so, well, we’ve been snoozing. I also don’t read as many reviews as I used to. Jonathan is the man now.Nevertheless, I came across this very recent one from Tony the Frank and it made me miss reading some of these excellent essays on the ephemeral as a regular thang. Tony remains one of the best ...

Critique of the Week

Again, since we’ve brought in a new LemonMeter editor, the incomparable Jonathan “JT” Ross, I don’t have the opportunity to read as many reviews as a I used, but I have missed the smart, personal and sometimes off-the-rails offerings from EyeSpyLA’s M.R. “The Huntress” Hunter and I did manage to land on this particular one recently and thought I’d highlight it as this week’s COW.It’s an excellent offering, smart, personal and thorough, but most of...

Critique of the Week (On a Monday)

This is the kind of criticism you get when someone with this much experience and knowledge is free to write and speak as they wish, without word caps or community cajoling, it’s rich and thoughtful and forward thinking, it’s what we aspire to with the BLI. While I don’t entirely agree with Don’s assessment of the show, I was mildly lukewarm on the overall, Don is right to tout this as a potential trailblazer for a new way to produce big in LA. Be sure to read the whole article&...
